This project looked at urban water management through an ecological lense. In most urban settings, water is designed to run away from properties and into sewers. This was the case for this design, which also left a standard grass lawn dry and patchy. Instead of turning to drought-tolerant plants in a high precipitation environment, a rain garden was designed to capture and store the large amount of run off from the roof. Over time, this water will help rebuild the aquafer below and reduce watering requirements in a native landscape. The organic shape of a rain garden lent itself well to pursuing a creative space with limited straight lines to develop front yard visual interest. Clients installed this project themselves.
